TORAH INSTITUTE WITH RABBI KIRSHNER
We pray 3 times a day but why?
What is it we are saying?
What purpose does it have? Is it for God, for us?
For community? All of the above or none of the above? What are all of those choreographic moves – bowing and bending and kneeling and raising on our toes? These are just some of the questions clergy members field about prayer. This year Torah Institute will unpack prayer. We will look at its origins, its purpose, variations in denominations and stripes of Judaism as well as learning how prayer evolved over time. Our goal by the end of the 10-week course is to better familiarize each participant with the Siddur, the choreography and the meaning behind much of what is our cornerstone ritual of Tefillah.
No prior knowledge is necessary and the course is open to all. Members fee is $180 and non-members is $360. Taught by Rabbi Kirshner.

THURSDAY NIGHT CLASS WITH RABBI FREEDMAN
“Jewish Bio-Medical Ethics.” With a curriculum provided by JTS, we’ll explore 21st century questions about modern medical ethics. Using video lectures and classic Jewish texts, we will identify the timeless Jewish voices of our tradition and apply them ourselves to these most timely issues. Topics include advance directives, end-of-life care, surrogacy, and enhancement. Select Thursdays at 7:30 PM October – December.
“Jewish Lifecycle Events Explained.” What are the key rituals that mark the Jewish birth, Bar/Bat Mitzvah, wedding, and death? What is “law” and what is “custom”? Why do we practice these rituals anyway? In the moment we don’t pause to fully explain these rituals; this course will provide that opportunity. Select Thursdays at 7:30 PM January – February.
“Key Texts in Israel’s history.” In anticipation of Israel’s 70th birthday, we will explore central texts in Israel’s development: The Jewish State, HaTikvah, Declaration of Independence, UN Resolutions, etc. We will utilize the anthology edited by the late Rabbi Arthur Hertzberg (Z’L), The Zionist Idea.
