TORAH INSTITUTE WITH RABBI KIRSHNER
We pray 3 times a day but why?
What is it we are saying?
What purpose does it have? Is it for God, for us?
For community? All of the above or none of the above? What are all of those choreographic moves – bowing and bending and kneeling and raising on our toes? These are just some of the questions clergy members field about prayer. This year Torah Institute will unpack prayer. We will look at its origins, its purpose, variations in denominations and stripes of Judaism as well as learning how prayer evolved over time. Our goal by the end of the 10-week course is to better familiarize each participant with the Siddur, the choreography and the meaning behind much of what is our cornerstone ritual of Tefillah.
No prior knowledge is necessary and the course is open to all. Members fee is $180 and non-members is $360. Taught by Rabbi Kirshner.
Class Schedule: November 9th, 16th, 30th December 7th and 14th February 8th and 15th March 1st, 15th, and 22nd.
SH’MA LISTENING SESSIONS
Sh’ma means to listen. 2016 marks Rabbi Kirshner’s tenth year as the leader of TE. Your voices are important to him. As a community, we want to hear about what we are doing well and work towards addressing challenges. Make your voice heard.
JEWISH ETHICS WITH RABBI FREEDMAN
What does Judaism say about ______? Rabbi Freedman will facilitate a course organized by JTS: “Jewish Values in an Age of Choice.” We will watch brief video lectures of JTS professors analyzing how the Jewish tradition answers today’s toughest ethical dilemmas. Then we will use these lenses to explore issues like food production, fracking, mass incarceration, modern-day slavery, torture and just war, end-of-life care, lying, and other important topics. Fall 2016. Taught by Rabbi Freedman.
UNLOCKING THE TRADITIONS WTIH RABBI FREEDMAN
Pirkei Avot Can a life of Torah and ethical living be summarized in just a few words? Our ancient Rabbis attempted to do so in a tractate of Talmud called Pirkei Avot. “If not now, when?” “Acquire yourself a teacher and fi nd yourself a friend.” “More things, more worries” are just a few of these pearls of wisdom we will learn and internalize together. Spring 2017. Taught by Rabbi Freedman
