Freedom of expression is an essential component of a democracy; Temple Emanu-El’s congregants and clergy are deeply proud to live in a country with constitutional protections guaranteeing free speech. Thus, we do not have any issue with protestors who peacefully protest and voice their opinion near the entrance to the Temple’s property.  Ironically, it is apparently Temple Emanu-El’s deep and steadfast support for the State of Israel that has caused a small handful to feel compelled to protest. The Supreme Court of Israel has continually defended freedom of speech, calling it “the lifeline of democracy.” We are proud to stand with Israel – the Middle East’s only true democracy.

As much as we respect and support free speech, we are equality committed to ensuring that every member of our congregation is free to come to Temple Emanu-El and worship as they wish, without being subject to intimidation or an invasion of their privacy. Unfortunately, some of the recent protests have caused our worshippers to be concerned for their safety and there have been attempts to invade the privacy of our clergy. Appropriate limitations may be placed on free speech to ensure that it does not triumph over the free exercise of religion. We are grateful to the Borough of Closter and its Police Department for ensuring our free exercise of religion. We will continue to work with the town and police to ensure that each member of our congregation is able to worship at our synagogue without fear and without an invasion of privacy.
